The Rowan Family Reunion Scholarship

The Rowan Family values scholarship and understands it's significance in enhancing ones quality of life.  We established a scholarship fund designed to help students attend a post secondary institution.  Assistance is contingent upon the financial resource available for that year.  

The Rowan Family Reunion has a $100.00 Book Award gift given to graduating high school students that are direct descendants, have been accepted to an institution of Higher learning, attended a reuion, and can give their lineage back to Harry & Catherine Rowan or William & Violet Shively.

Roseanna Crump Thurman Scholarship

Rose Anna Crump Thurman daughter of Willie Levi and Beulah Maetta Crump, and granddaughter of Ella Rowan Crump and Daniel Crump, great granddaughter of Levi Rowan and Mary Fields. Great great grandparents Harry and Katherine Rowan. 

She was married to Joseph Ray Thurman Sr. and the mother of eight children.  Bobby V. Brown, (Father George Valentine), Barry Edward Bowles (Father Edward Bowles); Etta Joan Thurman Ford, Joseph Ray Thurman, Gary Montez Thurman, Saundra Louise Thurman-Custis, Patricia Elaine Thurman,  Rose Anna Thurman Tanner (Father Joseph Ray Thurman Sr. ) 

Although a busy mother of eight children, Rose Anna found time to participate in local politics, serve her community throughchurch activities and together with her eldest daughter, Bobbye V. Brown, became a founder and Leader of the well-known Senior Girl Scout Troop 749.

The troop traveled Nation Wide exploring national parks, visiting Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and attending several World Fairs.

Rose Anna retired from the East Side Day Care Center as a Lead Instructor. She was regarded as the care-giver of the neighborhood as both the young and old could depend on her for support and kind words.

She and her husband Joseph were active in local school activities and programs and promoted higher education for their children.  Joseph earned a sixth grade education and read several newspapers every day.  He owned a restaurant, Joe’s Chili Bowl, and worked at Harvester International as a foundry man until his retirement.  Both valued life long learning and becoming an expert in your chosen career.

The Scholarship Award is to be presented at the Rowan Banquet/Business meeting.  The recipient is expected to be in attendance virtually. If the recipent is unable to attend, an immediate family member can accept the award.  The check may be given to the recipent after proof of enrollment, address of self and institution.  If the recipient is unable to attend school during the fall semester/term as indicated on their application, the award will not be sent or must be returned as soon as possible.  The committee could make a recommendation to the president to award the scholarship to another candidate that met all requirement.

Eligibility for the Scholarship Award:

  • Member of the Rowan Family
  • Submit an essay on how you plan to contribute to your Family and Communitee
  • Valid proof of acceptance into a post-high school program (does not have to be a 4-year university)

HAROLD AUGUSTUS and OLGA JOSEPHINE ROWAN SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established for the descendants of the Rowan Family in the name of Harold and Josephine, he was the son of Henry and Daisy Rowan, the grandson of Levi Rowan and the great grandson of Harry and Catherine Rowan.

They were married for 63 years and to that union were 6 children:  

Valerie LaVerne, Olga Marilyn (Jeff), Stephanie Renee (Wayne), Verne Augustus (Cathy), Jeanette Cristi (Marc) and John Edward (Rico), 8 grandchildren, 12 Great grandchildren and 4 Great Great grandchildren.

Harold and Josephine loved the Rowan Family Reunion and were very active members, in fact, Josephine started the picnic.  They brought their children up to be active members as well, and they have brought their children to also be active.

The scholarship will be in the amount of $500 and will be awarded to the family member who meets these following scholarship requirements:

 1.  Must have attended a minimum of 4 reunions (not when you were a baby)

 2.  Must have proof of enrollment in a post secondary institution

 3.  Must include an essay about “What Family Means to You.”

Committee Selection Process

The committee will select a point person that will ensure all information is received from applicants.  In the event several applications are received, special consideration will be given to GPA, letter of why they should be selected as a recipient, complete lineage, and participation in activities and/or Rowan Family Reunions.  In the event of a tie, it will be the responsibility of the committee to determine the recipient.  If the committee is unable to decide between two applicants, the scholarship funds can be divided.  

The Scholarship Award is designed to assist an individual who will be attending a post secondary institution for the first time, but if no applications are received, the committee could award a prervious recipient or applicant who has achieved at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale during their first year of college.  If no one is selected, funds not awarded will remain in scholarship account.
