Beverly Rose Hayden Woodard, 87, died at 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at home with family present, she was born June 13, 1935 to Arthur B. and Mary Lorean Phelps Hayden in Danville, IL; granddaughter of Lela Rowan Hayden, the great granddaughter of Levi Rowan and the great-great granddaughter of Harry and Catherine Rowan.
Beverly married the love of her life Davey Lee Woodard, March 6, 1953 at Fountain County Indiana. From that union came four of her greatest gifts; sons Davey Lee Jr. Woodard of Victorville, CA, Robin Keith and Randy Scott Woodard of Danville and daughter Jacqueline Yvonne Woodard Smith of Danville.
Beverly “Mrs. Woodard”, was preceded in death by her husband Davey Lee Woodard Sr., parents Arthur B. and Lorean Phelps Hayden, paternal grandparents Joseph D. Hayden, Lela Rowan Hayden, maternal grandparents Hiram Ballard Phelps and Mary Lucille Kirby Phelps, eight brothers Arthur Jr, Stewart Lee, Stanley Cordell, Gordon Radford, Roland Jay, Douglas Jordon, Victor Clayton Hayden and Charles Clark; sister Rose Marie Hayden. Great grandson Angelo Rue Jr., great granddaughters Amiryana Hill and Jloni Anderson, and great-great granddaughter Alaysha Carradine.
She is survived by her maternal uncle William G. Phelps of Danville IL, and aunt Juanita Phelps Burns of Chicago, sister Joyce Hayden Fletcher of Houston, TX; children Davey, Robin, Randy Woodard and Jacqueline Woodard Smith. Grandsons Jeffrey E. Barnes of Oakland, CA, Tywayn Hill, Courtney Hunter, Amir Smith all of Danville and Davey Lee Woodard III of Victorville, CA, Dayjohn Woodard of Indianapolis, IN and Roshad Woodard of Universal City, TX, grand-daughters Nicole L. Deleon of Danville, and Koisa (Kendrick) Bennett of Prattville, AL. Seventeen great-grandchildren and 11 ½ great-great children, special niece Allyson Cannon, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She attended Garfield Grade school and was in the last 8th grade class to graduate from there. She later obtained her G.E.D. from Danville Junior College (DACC) and went to nurses training at Lakeview School of Nursing graduating in 1970. She furthered her education at Indiana State University where she obtained her BSN in 1976. She received her 50-year nursing pin from Lakeview School of Nursing in 2021.
Beverly was employed at General Motors Central Foundry Division in Tilton as the night nurse until she retired in 1990. She was previously employed at Veteran Admission Hospital and Lakeview Hospital. She worked for H & R Block for many years. After retirement from GM, she became a HIV educator for Los Angeles County California
Beverly was a lifetime member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. church, singing in her mother’s award-winning Angel choir as a child. She was involved in many church organizations heading up fund-raising drives to help the church. She and Paul Randle created ORAM outreach ministry to serve the sick and shut-in in the church and community delivering seasonal flowers to seniors and ‘First Night’ dinners to families with a recent death.
She was life member of the Walnut Council, Inc, a member of the 127-year-old Rowan Family Reunion of Owensboro, KY., alumni of Lakeview School of Nursing and Indiana State University.
A Homegoing Celebration will commence at 12:00 Noon Thursday July 7, 2022 at Allen Chapel AME 503 N. Jackson St. Danville. Eulogist: Pastor Mac Arthur Pendleton. A visitation will begin at 11:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow after at Danville National Cemetery.
