William Leslie “Pete” Shively

William was surrounded by his loving family prior to his passing and accompanied by his loving wife of 38 years, Lucille Shively, at his final hour.

 

He was born February 27, 1931, to James Harvey Shively, II and Clara Cabniss Shively in Pittsburgh, PA. He was the grandson of James Harvey Shively I and Julia Wright; great-grandson of Octavia Richardson Shively and Edmond Nathaniel Shively.  Octavia was the sister of Mary Louisa Richardson Rowan, wife of Ed Rowan, son of Harry and Catherine Rowan.  

 

William was one of eight children born to this union and the last surviving sibling. He attended Central High School in Louisville, Kentucky. After graduation, he joined the US Army where he served and was honorably discharged in 1956. William had a long professional career in Louisville with the Defense Mapping Agency as a Cartographer and retired in 1986.

 

William was an avid tennis player and longtime member of the West Louisville Tennis Club. He loved to travel with his family, visiting many places in and outside of the United States. He was always taking pictures that captured all phases of his life that reflect cherished memories! He loved his family and was an active participant in Rowan Family Reunion activities, proudly holding the title of “Oldest Member” in recent years. He was an active member of Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ in Indianapolis where he served on the Usher Board, helped with simple maintenance needs, and attended faithfully until his passing.

 

William is survived by his wife, Lucille Shively, children, Ann (Russell) Branch, Gerald (Mary) Shively, grandchildren, Jordan, Jaylen, and Jayda Branch, Raymond and James Shively, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Harvey Shively, II and Clara Cabniss Shively, and siblings James H. Shively, Jr., Octavia “Tillie” Mills, Julia “Peggy” McCrary, Alice Coverdale, Paul Shively, Austin Shively, George Shively.

 

William “Pete” Shively touched the lives of so many and will be remembered for his infectious smile, hardy laugh, love of his family and friends, kindness, support, and encouragement. He lived a full, beautiful life and will never be forgotten.

 

William L. Shively, age 93, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

 

A visitation for William will be held Friday, January 17, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00 PM.
