
Crawford Lee Spann
1954-01-16 2024-07-26Crawford Lee Spann, 70, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully at Community Hospital on July 26, 2024, with his brother, Alfonzo, by his side until his final moments.
Born on January 16, 1954, in Indianapolis, Crawford was the son of Elizabeth Waterson and Samuel Spann. He was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church and attended Indianapolis Public Schools, graduating from Emmerich Manual High School in 1972. At Manual, he was recognized as one of the Top Senior Wrestlers and helped lead his team to the 1971 City Championship, winning the 167-pound weight class.
Crawford continued his education at Danville Area Community College in Illinois before returning to Indianapolis, where he began a long and dedicated career at Methodist Hospital as a Psychiatric Mental Health Technician. For over 40 years, Crawford provided invaluable support to individuals during some of their most challenging times, with a special passion for working with adolescents.
On July 10, 1982, Crawford married Wanda Thruston, and they had four children together: Carrie Lynn, Christopher LaMonte, Crystal LaRae, and Chad Lee. His children are the grandchildren of Edsel and Sallie Thruston, Great-grandchildren of Georgia Ida Olney Crump and Samuel Edward Thruston, great-great-grandchildren of Ellen Rowan Crump, great-great-great-grandchildren of Levi Rowan, and great-great-great-great-grandchildren of Harry and Catherine Rowan.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Cameron LeNard Talley-Spann (2005); his mother, Elizabeth Waterson (1997); his father, Samuel Spann (1982); his brother, Robert L. Burge (1969); and his brother, Richard J. Spann (2016).
Crawford is survived by his children: Carrie L. Gale (Keathun Sr.), Christopher L. Spann (Meghan), Crystal L. Spann (Dwight), and Chad L. Spann (Leila); six grandchildren; his brother, Alphonzo Spann; his sister, Saundra Moore; his former wife, Dr. Wanda Thruston; a host of nieces and nephews; and many others whose lives he touched through his work and kindness.
Crawford’s legacy of compassion and dedication will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
