Sharon Glaspie
2047-12-01 2025-08-11With grace, brilliance, and boundless compassion, Sharon Lavon Hunter Glaspie lived a life that uplifted everyone fortunate enough to know her. Born on December 1, 1947, in Indianapolis, Indiana, she was the firstborn, of the late Walter Leon Hunter Sr. and Mary Etta Hayden Hunter.
Cousin Sharon was the daughter of Mary Etta Hayden Hunter, the granddaughter of Wilbert G. Hayden, the great granddaughter of Julia Rowan, the great-great granddaughter of Henry Rowan & Mary Mundt, and the great-great-great granddaughter of Harry & Catherine Rowan.
From her earliest years, Sharon radiated purpose and poise. She attended St. Mary’s Academy, where she served as Treasurer of her junior class and began her professional journey at Indiana Bell Telephone Company while still in high school. Her pursuit of excellence led her to St. Louis University, and later to Indiana University–Purdue University at Indianapolis, where she met her future husband, Donald Glaspie.
Together, they raised two beautiful daughters eventually settling in Bedford Heights, Ohio. Sharon’s intellectual curiosity and drive for impact led her to earn a degree from Cleveland State University and obtain Professional Certificates from Boston College and the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.
Her distinguished career at Ohio Bell (later Ameritech and AT&T) spanned over 30 years, culminating in her role as Vice President of External Affairs. Though she retired in 2000, Sharon’s devotion to service never rested.
In 2004, she became Director of Building Healthy Communities, a Sisters of Charity Health Ministry in Cleveland’s Central Neighborhood. There, she cultivated programs that reflected her deep commitment to health, education, and empowerment:
• Youth baseball and tennis leagues
• The Garden Boyz,” a gardening and entrepreneurship initiative where young men grew and sold vegetables at local farmers markets
• Cooking classes for adults and children focused on wholesome and balanced meals
• A teen adventure book club that nurtured imagination and dialogue
• Crochet workshops for beginners and seasoned makers alike
Known affectionately as “Miss Sharon,” she was a Master Gardener, a mentor, and a guiding light. Her civic engagement was equally profound: she was an alumna of Leadership Cleveland, Past President of the League of Women Voters–Cleveland, a member of the Bedford Heights Democratic Club, and Past President of Blacks in Management. She found joy in bee keeping, bird watching, and the transcendent beauty of the Cleveland Orchestra.
Sharon’s adventurous spirit carried her across continents—visiting Africa, Peru, Costa Rica, Dubai, Germany, and many other destinations. She was also a proud member of the Carat Club, where she became a Silver Carat in 2023 sharing laughter, elegance, and enduring friendships.
On, August 11, 2025, she earned her heavenly wings, leaving behind a legacy of love, leadership, and unwavering faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved brothers Barry and Jeffery Hunter. She leaves to cherish her memory:
• Her devoted sister Nancy Bryant (William)
• Her loving brother Walter Leon Hunter Jr. (Jacqueline)
• Her beloved daughters Ariana Glaspie and Amber Sharpley
• Her treasured grandchildren Aliyah, Alicia, and Aaron
• Her special and loving companion Bracy Lewis
• And a host of relatives, friends, and community members whose lives she touched with grace and generosity
The family extends heartfelt gratitude for every prayer, visit, flower, and act of kindness shared during this time. Sharon’s life was a radiant testament to purpose, compassion, and joy—and her spirit will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
