Velita Douglas

Velita Douglas of Owensboro was born September 2, 1946 to the late Earl Joseph, Sr and Sallye Frances Taylor Moorman. She passed away peacefully on Wednesday January 1, 2025 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

She was the daughter of Earl J. Moorman and Sallye F. Taylor Moorman, the granddaughter of Lucian Moorman and Pearl Hayden Moorman, the great-granddaughter of James M. Hayden and Julia Rowan, the great-great-granddaughter of Henry Rowan and Mary Mundt Rowan, and the great-great-great-granddaughter of Harry and Catherine Rowan.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by: her husband, William Edward Douglas Sr.; two sisters, Regina Earlyne Adams and Teresa Lyniece Durr; three brothers, Russell Delano Moorman, Louis Dion Moorman and Martin Maurice Moorman; two great-grandchildren Tramel Barksdale and Dakota Carothers; and a son-in-law, Derrick West.

She is survived by: her six children, Anitra Natosha Douglas, Dezireno Douglas, Velina West, Dejohnna (Chauntell) Paulk, William Douglas, and Frederick (Leslie) Douglas; 16 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; five brothers Joseph (Lourendy) Moorman, Michael (Patsy) Moorman, Dewayne (Debbie) Moorman, Adrian (Kristie) Moorman all of Owensboro, and Earl (Katherine) Moorman, Jr., of Virgina Beach, VA.; one sister Angela Moorman of Owensboro; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Velita retired from General Electric. She loved her family unconditionally and her home was always a safe haven for everyone in the community. Velita was a true force of nature, she was known for her feisty spirit, boundless energy, and rambunctious zest for life that kept everyone on their toes. She lived life unapologetically and taught us all to embrace the moments that mattered, never shying away from adventure or a good laugh.

She will be deeply missed by all who had the joy of knowing her. Though she may no longer be with us, her fiery spirit will live on in our hearts, reminding us to live boldly, love fiercely, and never be afraid to stir up a little fun.

Rest easy, Velita “Nana” Douglas. Heaven just got a little louder.

A celebration to honor Velita’s memory will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday January 11, 2025 at Tenth Street Missionary Baptist Church, 1213 E 10th St, Owensboro, KY 42303, with Pastor Clarence Tapp officiating.
